There is a rather alarming rise in the incidence of liver and gall bladder disease in Australia. More than 2000 Australians die each year from chronic liver diseases, cirrhosis and cancers of the liver, gall bladder and bile ducts. From 1999 to 2009 the number of liver transplants in Australia and NZ more than doubled; increasing from approximately 1600 to more than 3500.
