Being nutty

Over 5000 participants have confirmed that inflammation can be quelled with nuts. The study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that the regular consumption of tree nuts (that is, five times per week) was linked to significantly lower inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6.
Further to that, substituting three serves of potatoes, potato chips or refined grains with nuts also resulted in an even healthier inflammatory profile.

And, even more heartening is a recent in vitro study that found some nuts can put the brake on colon cancer. In particular, macadamias, hazelnuts, walnuts and almonds. Once fermented in the digestive system, the fibre they contain contributes to the production of butyrate, which promotes the health of the intestinal mucosa and exerts chemo protective effects. Additionally, the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase and superoxide dismutase were increased in nut treated samples, reducing the levels of cancer promoting reactive oxygen species.

The nuts also significantly inhibited the growth of the colon adenoma cells and increases apoptosis (cell death).

In a nutshell, pardon the pun, a habitual consumption of this nutritious snack (allowing of course for individual allergies) may help mitigate chronic inflammation and associated diseases.
