The bright side
Peace, tranquillity, sunrises, sunsets, birdsong, butterflies, blossoms… these are a few of my favourite things! Also raindrops on roses, but not schnitzel with noodles. All have been enhanced by the COVID-19 shutdown!
Daily walks around my delightful, tiny western suburb have opened my eyes to the stunning array of pretty hanging baskets replete with colourful pansies with their delicate faces smiling serenely back at me.
Residents make small, generous offerings of home-grown herbs and lemons in small baskets attached to their fences. Others have small cupboards encouraging others to help themselves to well-loved books.
Pink blossoms covering the pavements and nature strips after a windy day, resembling dainty confetti. The local My Whippy van, playing Greensleeves in the distance, is somehow reassuring, encouraging a sense of community and of a time in the past when life was fun and all was right.
Although we Victorians have all had enough of tight restrictions, I am sure some of us will one day(!) remember the small silver linings and may not rush to embrace the daily commute, traffic snarls, constant sound of construction and cars and trucks in the background, the greyness and congestion of the CBD… perhaps we may embrace a post-COVID life will a little less rushing and an appreciation of small, beautiful, wondrous offerings of nature.
