Splendiferous neighbourhood sounds!

Splendiferous neighbourhood sounds!

I recall when I moved to the west over twenty years ago, wondering whether I had made the right decision. East to west…was it going to be fine?

Later in the day of my big move, I heard the endearing sound of Green Sleeves emanating from a Mr Whippy van further down the street. Aha! All shall be okay. A reassuring and comforting sound of childhood. A sign that I was in the right place!

Over the delightful decades since I have resided in my beloved west, I have become increasingly aware of so many other wonderful sounds. (Especially during the lock downs in Victoria when the streets were eerily quiet … always a silver lining somewhere!)

The sounds of the two doves which seem to live in my garden lovingly cooing to each other.

The flap of the wattle birds’ wings as they dash from one tree to another. Crows chatting to each other organizing their tasks for the day. A particular favourite of mine is the happy purring of next door’s tabby cat as she sits on the letterbox doing roly-poly with gay abandon.

Let’s all spend a little time each day paying grateful attention to the sounds of nature around us.

Listening with intent is a gentle form of meditation, while simultaneously being tremendously uplifting.
