Plant life

Let’s try to be kinder to animals this year… cows, pigs, chickens, lambs. I could go on… they all have a right to life. Why not make a concerted effort to consume less of these worthy creatures. Better for the environment, our consciences and our health.

The abundance of vegetables available to us in Australia is astonishing. I have recently been trying all the rather exotic species of mushrooms, can’t return now to the good old, boring button mushroom.

Consider trying a vegetable you have never tasted, celeriac, Jerusalem artichokes, purple conga potatoes. The world is our oyster mushroom!

Why not have a meat-free month, just like an alcohol or gluten-free month?

As the brilliant Michael Pollan said in his extraordinary tome, In Defense of Food,

“Eat mostly plants, especially leaves. Treat meat as a

flavouring or special occasion food. Eating what stands

on one leg (mushrooms and plant foods) is better than

eating what stands on two legs (fowl), which is better than

standing on four legs (cows, pigs and other mammals).”

Take good care,
