Plant aid for the bowel
Many, many years ago when I first started practice as a fledging naturopath, if we had a patient with stomach ulcers, the recommendation would be take a very strong cup of chamomile tea, lay on the floor and roll from side to side!
Yes, the idea was to coat the stomach lining with the extract of chamomile to decrease inflammation, soothe and calm. We have moved on since then. . . and I swear I have not asked a patient to roll on the floor in the past 18 years!
It’s true!
Research diocumentated in the BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine 2015, finds that chamomile also has a truly significant effect on abdominal colic and diarrhoea.
Extracts of Matricaria chamomilla were given to mice, after an oral administration of castor oil to induce diarrhoea.
The results of the study was that Matricaria chamomilla had a positive anti-diarrhoeal, antisecretory and antispasmodic activity due to its ability to activate potassium channels along with weakening calcium antagonist effect.
Which basically means, chamomile can be confidently and effectively used in the treatment of diarrhoea, stomach cramps and inflammatory bowel disease where inflammation and loose bowels are the major symptoms without the floor roll!
