Peanut allergy and pro-biotics
A recent study of children with peanut allergies and pro-biotics shows promising results.
Sixty-two children with an allergy to peanuts participated in the Australian double blind, placebo-controlled randomised trial at Murdoch University. The children were given the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus LGG at a dose of 20 billion colony forming units or placebo, combined with peanut oral immunotherapy over 18 months.
By the end of the trial 89% of the patients receiving the active treatment were desensitized to the peanut protein, compared to 7% in the placebo group.
The trail was performed under close medical supervision, but it certainly paves a way for a potential pro-biotic solution to this life-threatening and disruptive problem.
Many of you will also be aware that this particular strain of pro‑biotic is also extremely effective at treating childhood eczema.
