Manuka honey and cystic fibrosis
The antimicrobial effects of Manuka honey can inhibit bacteria involved in cystic fibrosis pulmonary infections.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa cultured in animal lung tissue was treated with either therapeutic grade Manuka honey (12+ Unique Manuka Factor [UMF] rating), antibiotics or a combination of both.
As a standalone treatment, Manuka was found to eradicate 39% of antibiotic resistant bacteria, compared to 29% success with the antibiotics. However when used in combination, researchers found that bacterial eradication increased to 90%.
Manuka honey may be sweet, but is bad-to-the-bone in face of bacterial superbugs, giving cystic fibrosis patients a winning edge over airway infections.
