Jolt for immunity

Many will recall I addressed the importance of the pre-emptive strike in boosting immunity in my March newsletter last year. I think a quick refresh may be helpful…

The basics for ensuring a strong immune system will always be zinc, vitamin C, vitamin D and specific probiotics.

Think 500 mg vitamin C, 30mg of zinc, 1000IU vitamin D and a probiotic with the strains Lactobacillus rhamnosus LGG and Lactobacillus paracasei which help to promote immune regulation by interacting with the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). A great deal of our immune system is located in the gut, so stimulating these immune-enhancing cells within is crucial.

In case of the onset of viral infection, increase the above to 1000mg vitamin C taken in four divided doses throughout the day, remain on same dose of zinc and increase vitamin D to 4000IU.

Add in immune-enhancing herbs such as Andrographis, Olive leaf and Echinacea. Of worthy note is that very recent clinical trials have illustrated Andrographis reduces the severity and duration of colds and flus. Decreasing cough and sore throats in particular.

Indeed, Thailand has cleared Andrographis for use in COVID-19 treatment. The Thai ministry has noted that Andrographis can curb virus and reduce severity of inflammation. Human trials showed COVID-19 symptoms improved within three days of the treatment without side effects, if administered within 72 hours of testing positive.

Of also similar interest is that green tea has been shown to enhance the antiviral capacity of Andrographis. Many supplements containing Andrographis now combine it with green tea and zinc to greatly enhance the anti-viral effect.

A super mushroom mixture containing Coriolus, Cordyceps, Reishi and Shitake may also be added to the immune-boosting strategy. This combination of these four immune-stimulating mushrooms fight infection, particularly recurrent and relapsing infections and rebuild immunity after immune suppression.
