H.Pylori and Probiotics
A literature search of the MEDLINE database (1996–2006) has recently been performed selecting all in vitro, animal and human published (English language) studies that cover pro-biotics and H.pylori.
Seven of the nine human studies showed an improvement of H.pylori gastritis and a decrease in H.pylori density after probiotic administration.
Moreover the addition of probiotics to standard antibiotic treatment improved H.pylori eradication rates and reduced associated side effects. (Incidence of side-effects: 23% vs. 46%, with combination therapy vs. antibiotics alone.)
While no study could confirm the eradication of H.pylori infection with probiotics, it certainly illustrates that long-term intake of probiotics may reduce the risk of developing disorders associate with high degrees of gastric inflammation.
