CoQ10 and a healthy heart

CoEnzyme Q 10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance that plays a crucial role in the production of cellular energy.

The main function of CoQ10 is the manufacture of adenosine triphosphate, which is the basic energy molecule of our cells.  The amount of CoQ10 present in our cells declines with age.

CoQ10 is a major anti-oxidant and assists heart function by enhancing pumping action and electrical function, as well as lowering blood pressure.

A recent trial concluded that the addition of a small amount of CoQ10 can achieve big benefits in patients already taking some form of heart medication.

A randomised trial involving 128 adults being treated for heat failure with ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, statins and/or other medications found that those who supplemented with a modest 30 mg of CoQ10 daily had lower levels of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers and subsequently reduced incidence of atrial fibrillation when assessed at one year.

The authors concluded that CoQ10 is a safe and valuable adjuvant for medicated patients with heart failure, which also attenuates the drivers underlying cardiovascular disease.
