Researchers at the University of Waterloo have discovered a lipid (fat) in avocados, Avocatin B, which selectively targets and destroys human leukaemia stem cells, without harming any healthy blood cells.

This molecule was found to preferentially accumulate within the mitochondria (energy producing unit) of leukaemia cells, essentially starving them and promoting cellular death.
Currently there are no therapies for leukaemia that possess this unique ability to seek and destroy cancer cells specifically.
