A Mindful Meal

Okey dokey, I am on my bandwagon again!” Oh no!” I can hear you cry, “the nagging starts again about slowing down and eating with intention.
Yes, that’s it! Post the festive season it seems timely and sensible to remind ourselves of a few pointers on conscious consumption. Give your full attention on what, and how you are eating.
Conscious consumption encourages digestion and increases not only nutrient absorption, but also the enjoyment we can elicit from our meals. So…here we go.
The Meal Mantra
- Before eating, ask yourself…am I hungry, or am I looking to eat for another reason.
- Sit at a table to eat and put away or switch off all distraction
- Bring your awareness to your senses. What does our meal look like, smell like? Being in touch with your senses can kick start the digestive process before you have even taken a bite, stimulating the production of saliva and gastric juices.
- Eat slowly, chewing each mouthful well and pause and place your cutlery or food down between bites.
- Ideally, beverages should be consumed away from meals-15-30 minutes either side. Sip rather than gulp any drinks
- Eat only until satiated, rather than full. It takes 20 minutes for the gut to communicate to the brain when you are full.
- Lastly, let’s take a moment to be grateful for the nourishing meal we are about to eat, we are blessed to have a choice regarding our meals.
