Hyper Additives

Hyper Additives

food_colouring.jpgThere is much convincing observational and well substantiated clinical evidence that food additives, flavourings and colours can lead to hyperactivity. A randomized, double-blinded, placebo- controlled trial reported in Lancet 2007 has provided further proof of this undesirable relationship. In summary, the study found a strong case that food additives exacerbate hyperactive behaviours – inattention, impulsivity, and over excitability – in childhood. The study showed that adverse behaviours from additives was not restricted to children with ADHD, but could also be seen in the general population.

Brown Rice is Very Nice

brown_rice.jpgBiodynamic brown rice is a nutritionalist’s dream. Brown rice is a wholesome food which can meet our protein requirements quite adequately when combined in a variety of interesting and delicious ways. It has far more protein, calcium, B vitamins and iron than its pale, insipid, white counterpart, and also has the added benefit of containing vitamin E, found in the rice germ of whole brown rice, which is absent in white rice.

Leave Those Pigs In Peace!

Leave Those Pigs In Peace!

PigA recent report by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), entitled Food, nutrition, physical activity, and the prevention of cancer, a global perspective, recommends avoiding processed meat such as bacon and ham. The report, a major analysis of research conducted by an international panel of experts every ten years, says there is convincing evidence that processed meats are a cause of colorectal cancer. Processed meats are preserved by smoking, curing, or salting or contain chemical preservatives. Ham, bacon, pastrami, salami, sausages, bratwurst, frankfurters and hot dogs are all processed meats.

A Herbal Profile – Meadowsweet

A Herbal Profile – Meadowsweet

meadowsweet.jpgThis is one of my favourite herbs, a kind and generous friend of the digestive system and quite beautiful as well. If you have Meadowsweet growing in your herbal patch (and I strongly recommend anyone with tummy troubles should grow this herb in abundance), the best time to pick the fully opened flowers and leaves is mid–late summer and dry gently at a temperature not exceeding 40 degrees celsius.

Lignans – the new phyto oestrogen

Lignans – the new phyto oestrogen

charlemagne.jpgCharlemagne considered flaxseed so important for the health of his subjects that he passed laws in the 8th century A.D., requiring its consumption. He was perhaps a little over ambitious and even a touch severe, he was nonetheless on the right track! Many of us regularly add flaxseed oil to our daily diets in order to benefit from its rich array of Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fatty acids. We should however, also consider increasing our intake of these delightful seeds, as well as consuming the oil. Flaxseeds are a truly superb source of lignans and consequently have a wide range of beneficial effects for human health.
