Herbicide and coeliac disease?
You may recall in a previous newsletter I noted the findings by Dr Alessio Fasano, a world renowned expert in gluten disorders showing that the human enzyme is unable to completely breakdown gluten.
Dr Fasano has also discovered that the non-broken down gliadin particle of gluten triggers the release of zonulin, that triggers the relaxation of the tight-junction cells which make up our gut wall. This in turns causes small intestinal permeability, and a release of bacteria into the blood stream and a disruption to the beneficial bacteria in the small intestine.
This results in an inflammatory cascade and a whole host of immune and gut dysfunctions may result.
Now a recent study has revealed the world’s bestselling herbicide, glyphosate, could be responsible for the rising epidemic of coeliac disease, gluten intolerance and undiagnosed gut disorders.
It is proposed the glyphosate works via multiple mechanisms to induce dysbiosis, nutrient malabsorption and impaired CYP enzyme activity; all pathogenic factors known to contribute to the aetiology of coeliac disease. It seems therefore that gluten is not the only adversary for patients with coeliac disease, steer clear of for optimal benefits.
