Keep it natural! Or when is food no longer food?
No, my purchase was purely for research only. I wanted to see if there had been any improvement in the multinational commercial yoghurt scene. Sadly, I can report no.
Fortunately my yoghurt did contain milk, and a few strains of Lactobacillus. And that’s where any semblance to a good quality yoghurt ended. This monster also contained gelatin (run a mile if any yoghurt you buy contains gelatin!), sugar, cream, emulsifiers, artificial colours and flavours plus artificial sweetener, even with all that sugar! It was fluorescent pink.
Good food is fresh, unfiddled with, seasonal and as close to nature as possible.
Good food is not something which has a list of ingredients as long as, well a short story! And I guarantee if the product contains “added” vitamins and minerals it has been completely stripped of its nutritional value in the processing transformation, steer well clear. (Processed cereals are a prime villain!)
Reading product labels is crucial for sound nutrition, and can range from being mildly entertaining, to slightly eerie or indeed downright disturbing.
But it is nonetheless a crucial exercise to ensure we have the knowledge to make informed decisions regarding our health and nutrition.
I’m thinking of starting a book club to discuss the most entertaining or outrageous food ingredient labels, a bit naturopathically nerdy, but hey, this could be fun!
