Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common occurrence post cardiac surgery, with the humble vitamin C now demonstrating benefit in reducing risk.

A recent meta-analysis of 14 trials assessed the recurrence of AF in over 2000 patients who had undergone cardiac surgery.

Oral administration of one to two grams per day of vitamin C (for 12 hours prior and 5-7 days post-surgery) decreased post‑operative AF by 73%, consequently shortening hospital stays. A safe and inexpensive intervention that may assist patients to avoid AF.
