Probiotics and iron uptake

An exciting new study recently reported in the British Journal of Nutrition has found that the probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum 299v, could increase iron absorption by 50 percent.

These benefits became evident when a group of women of reproductive age were given a fruit juice fortified with 5 mg of iron alone, or juice containing the same amount of iron in addition to 10 billion CFUs of Lactobacillus plantarum 299v over four days.

This unique probiotic strain is also renowned for relieving symptoms of bloating, abdominal pain, gas and wind.

Indeed a randomized, double blind placebo controlled trial tested the efficacy of L. plantarum 299v in 40 people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for four weeks. All patients treated with L. plantarum 299v reported significant improvement in stool frequency and complete resolution of their abdominal pain. An overall improvement in all IBS symptoms was noted in 95% of patients in the treatment group, compared to only 15% in the placebo group.

So for those who wish to maximize the iron they are absorbing from their diet or supplements, a double bonus. More iron and less gut pain!
